Netflix Gets Tough On Password Sharing

Bad news, y’all!

Netflix is taking no prisoners in 2023.

In a controversial decision, streaming service Netflix announced their plan to crack down on password sharing. Netflix will be requiring a Wi-Fi sign-in to the account’s primary location at least once a month. The new requirements got no love from consumers, with critics predicting an uptick in illegal pirating.

Detailed in the unveiled plans, the company will use information “such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity" to track password sharing, outright blocking devices outside the home that attempt to sign-in . For college students, separated families, couples in long-distance relationships, or travelers, this decision may force them to reconsider if Netflix is worth the hassle.

The streaming service offered travelers a temporary seven day passcode so they can stream on vacation, but this effort seems futile to some. “NETFLIX REVERSE YOUR DECISION” was trending on Twitter, and critics were quick to share their distaste for the company.

Netflix’s plot to prevent password sharing is no surprise, as the company claimed password sharing “undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve Netflix, as well as build our business,” according to a statement. This plan to get tough on password sharing became a priority when they reported a downturn in subscribers last April.

After axing their most popular shows, especially ones with dedicated fanbases, the streaming service might need to work for forgiveness. The competition between streaming services is cut-throat, and consumers are looking to make spending cuts where they can during the cost-of-living crisis. We’ll be waiting to see if this crackdown helps Netflix in the long run.
