Molly Goddard SS21’s Is Simply Joyous

Explosive greens, vivid oranges and a whole heap of tulle.

Central Saint Martin’s graduate, Molly Goddard has done it again with her Spring/Summer 2021 showcase, producing a whole host of winsome, swoon-worthy garments. Chunky frills, smocked voile, checkerboard and gingham cottons, are sure to refill one’s serotonin levels in an assemblage of efflorescent neon hues.  Explosive greens, vivid oranges and electric red fabrics were cut and crafted in maximalist anorak shapes and gloriously graced our screens through the virtual presentation - one I greatly devoured.

London’s own ‘Master of Tulle’ stated that the collection was inspired by an Italian villa filled with garish art - specifically Villa Menagoflio Litta owned by art collectors Giuseppe and Giovanni Panza. Goddard recalls how the couple were Claes Oldenburg enthusiasts, and she was stimulated by the casual contradiction of the papier-mâché sculptures and the beautiful architecture of the idyllic northern Italy residence. This juxtaposition translates well in the collection with deep rouged, more traditional, floral prints, paired with yellow polka dots and radiant appurtenances. It is hard not to smile and feel instantly content when viewing this showcase. One’s wider worries are set aside; the craziness of coronavirus dismissed. All in light of a masterful 31-piece collection.

The accompanying accessories were similarly of great intrigue - a part of Goddard’s work I previously had never cared too much for. The shoes, fuzzy flats and platform clogs lined with shearling, are a part of Goddard’s Collaboration with Australian brand Ugg. The emerald green platforms are glorious, and one can imagine such a silhouette becoming a staple for the brand - helping the label to defuse into a more commercial market. Personally, however, it was the contrasting coloured ruched satin bags which had me lustfully desiring, and of course… my wallet weeping.

The styling of Look 22, a knee length salmon skirt with a peach tulle overlay (classic Molly), paired under an oversized cream knit and the orange cross-body tote, is simply dreamy. Come spring next year I hope to attend all my lectures in a similar fit, despite the overriding reality of online learning and the limitation of my student finance.  Molly Goddard SS21 is a collection that effortlessly exudes joy. Spring/Summer 2021, for many remains a place of hope and the garments reflect this emotion. Her predominantly London-based team, working from their studio in Bethnal Green, have constructed a beautiful body of work in the midst of the pandemic. The jubilance of creativity and artistry has acted as escapism and a distraction through the harsh realities of the last few months. Goddard’s team are no exception. The brand acts as a perfect example of how a deep-set love for craftsmanship can be put into prolific action and produce such radiant fashions.
