The best looks from fashion's favourite night.

After last year’s Met Gala was postponed thanks to the worldwide pandemic, it was revealed that the 2021 theme would be In America: A Lexicon of Fashion which celebrates The Costume Institute’s new exhibit, focusing on American designers. Here are the most talked-about looks of the night…

EMMA CHAMBERLAIN

Emma Chamberlain showed up to her first Met Gala looking stunning in a mini gold Louis Vuitton dress with an asymmetrical hem, cut-outs and plunging neckline. According to LV, the dress includes almost 21,000 microbeads, 9,000 rhinestoes, 2,500 sequins, over 2,300 rococo style beads and nearly 2,000 Swarovski crystals! The dress also took 290 hours to hand-embroider.

LIL NAS X

Lil Nas X brought the drama with three custom gold Versace looks. The first channelled royalty with a luxury cape and huge shoulder pads, before being torn away to reveal a golden suit of armour. The final reveal was a sparkling skin-tight Versace bodysuit covered in crystals and the luxury houses signature print.

KIM KARDASHIAN

The Kardashian brought out a kinky Balenciaga look for the Met Gala. The design completely covered the star's face and body, only revealing her ankle-length ponytail. Although many speculated whether Ye was beside Kim K on the carpet, it appears it was the designer Demna Gvasalia.

BILLIE EILISH

This Oscar De La Renta gown stunned the Met Gala with Billie Elish giving an ode to Marilyn Monroe. Eilish looked like a vintage Hollywood starlet, stating “it was time” to bring the glamour. Using her platform for good, the singer also revealed she only agreed to work with the luxury label if they agreed to no longer use fur in future collections.

KIM PETRAS

A real show pony, Kim Petras arrived at her first Met Gala in a Collina Strada dress starring a 3D horse head bustier and dramatic skirt featuring a print from the brands resort 2020 collection. Love it or hate it, it serves as one of the nights boldest looks!

GRIMES

Grimes stuck with her futuristic aesthetic in an Iris Van Herpen gown, accessorised with a giant sword. “I mean, I feel like it started as a Dune thing,” the singer told Vogue of the inspiration for the ensemble, sharing that she’s a big fan of the famed science fiction story.

LOURDES LEON

Madonna’s daughter wore a hot pink studded dress inspired by Cher to her Met Gala debut. The sparkly fuchsia ensemble comes from Jeremy Scott’s Moschino and features a halter top and matching skirt both covered in sequin embellishments. Leon made a memorable statement, posing in the bold ensemble with her unshaven armpits.

KENDALL JENNER

Kendall Jenner returned to the Met Gala wearing a sheer, jewelled dress designed by Givenchy. Featuring a cascading train, the crystal-embellished dress took inspiration from Old Hollywood, reimaging a Givenchy look designed for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady.

FRANK OCEAN

Making a surprise appearance at the event, Ocean arrived wearing Prada and his newly launched jewellery label Homer – but that wasn’t the only accessory. The musician cradled a lime green animatronic baby, clad in a Homer inspired onesie whilst it waved at the crowd.

IMAN

Wearing British-American designer Harris Reed, supermodel Iman stunned in a custom brocade jumpsuit, worn under a feathered overskirt and matching headpiece. Iman was thrilled to work with “young designers, young blood,” for fashions biggest night she told Vogue, while Harris was thrilled to team up with someone so “iconic”.

TIMOTHEE CHALAMET

Timothee Chalamet appeared on the Met Gala carpet wearing a “mix of everything,” including a jacket from Haider Ackermann, a Rick Owens turtleneck and a pair of classic white converse – comfort is key right?

GIGI HADID

Hadid wore a strapless, fitted silk white column gown with an asymmetrical bodice, layered over a black bodice and black leather gloves. A high pony, barrette and diamond necklace finish off the look. Designed by Prada, the ensemble gives a glam yet simplistic feel.

RIHANNA AND A$AP ROCKY

Arriving fashionably late as always, the duo arrived clad in Demna Gvasalia’s debut Couture collection for Balenciaga. Rihanna wore a dramatic black ruffle dress with a beanie and Bulgari diamonds (267 carats worth!). Meanwhile, A$AP kept it colourful with a patchwork, blanket-like ensemble.
