MELLER's New LAB Project Takes Its Biggest Design Cues From Butterflies

Nature has always been fashion's greatest designer.

POSTED BY ZOE TYLER

MELLER is making that idea feel surprisingly literal with LAB Project 03, a futuristic eyewear collection inspired by one of nature's most fascinating creations: the butterfly. Instead of simply borrowing its aesthetic, the brand looked at how butterfly wings are actually built, using their layered structure and symmetry to shape four new shield-style sunglasses that blur the line between biology and industrial design.

Rather than treating the butterfly as decoration, MELLER approached it almost like an engineering blueprint. The result is a collection built around oversized wraparound lenses paired with an exposed stainless-steel frame hidden beneath a lightweight nylon shield. The layered construction mirrors the way butterfly wings are formed, creating sunglasses that feel sculptural without becoming bulky.

The campaign leans fully into that concept. Set inside a fictional MELLER LAB, it imagines a world where science and nature merge into one ecosystem. Biomechanical butterflies share the frame with human subjects, while a scientist abandons the microscope in favour of something far more immersive. It's less about studying nature from a distance and more about becoming part of it.

Each of the four styles offers its own identity through shape rather than simply colour. Blue, Green, Orange, and Pink lenses each feature a distinct silhouette, reinforcing the idea that every design represents its own species rather than a simple variation of the same frame. That attention to form makes the collection feel more like wearable design objects than seasonal accessories.

At £59, LAB Project 03 also marks a slightly more experimental direction for MELLER. The Barcelona eyewear label has built its reputation on accessible everyday sunglasses, but this release pushes further into fashion-forward territory without losing the lightweight comfort that defines the brand.

For anyone ready to swap classic frames for something that feels a little more futuristic, Project 03 proves nature still has plenty of ideas left to lend fashion.
