On December 16, 2024, Ian Griffiths presented the Max Mara Pre-Fall 2025 collection in Milan. This collection combined historical sophistication and modern minimalism, impressing critics and fashion enthusiasts worldwide.

Inspiration and Concept

The main source of inspiration was John Singer Sargent's portrait of Madame X. This iconic image, embodying strength and grace, became the starting point for the collection. Madame X is Virginie Gautreau, a Parisian socialite depicted in the controversial 1884 portrait. Sargent painted her in a black dress with a deep neckline. The painting caused a storm of outrage: the dress originally featured a strap slipping off her shoulder, which was perceived as a hint at impropriety and a challenge to the morals of the time. This damaged the reputations of both the model and the artist, forcing Sargent to move to London. However, the portrait eventually became a symbol of the avant-garde, representing boldness and refinement.

Griffiths sought to combine the aesthetics of this image with current fashion trends, adding modern restraint and simplicity. Of course, deep necklines are no longer seen as provocative or scandalous today, but they still manage to captivate.

Key Elements of the Collection

The story of Madame X is reflected in the collection. Griffiths interpreted this image through bold design decisions. The collection includes heart-shaped necklines, capes on trench coats, clean lines, and modern materials. The primary colors — black, cream, and chocolate — highlight the adaptation of the portrait’s ideas into practical and attractive designs.

The collection offers great variety. It includes a flared sleeveless dress with a large bow on the shoulder, made from dense fabric. There is also an off-the-shoulder jumpsuit with long sleeves and botanical prints. Another example is a minimalist A-line dress made from mesh material, complemented by clean lines and simple design.

Reaction and Reviews

The Milan presentation delighted critics. The harmonious blend of past and present and the craftsmanship were noted as the collection's main strengths. The collection reinforced Max Mara’s position as an icon of classic style and will inspire women worldwide.
