Oscar-winning actor, Matthew McConaughey, tweeted on May 25th after the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. While this gruesome nightmare struck a nerve in the United States, McConaughey has a close connection to this tragedy. The southerner is from Uvalde, which is about 80 miles west of San Antonio, for those who don't know.

Following the massacre of 19 students and two adults, many public figures came forward and agreed that we must do something to change the pattern in America. Unfortunately, while celebrities and other public figures have used their platform to come forward to lobby for gun control, nothing has been done because of the complete disregard for human lives by most politicians. McConaughey, who is known to be more moderate-to-republican with his political beliefs, spoke up about the tragedy and said “We have to rearrange our values and find a common ground above this devastating American reality that has tragically become our children’s issue.”

Shootings have become too familiar in America; 12 days ago, ten people were murdered in a shooting in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and not even ten days later, 19 children and two adults were murdered in a shooting. While those two events are spine-chilling and highly upsetting, it has become the new normal for people, especially children, to fear the outside world. As McConaughey said, this has become our “children’s issue”; children shouldn’t be afraid to go to school, and people shouldn’t be scared to go grocery shopping because of guns.
