Lizzie Berchie is a British-Ghanaian singer-songwriter and producer from East London, known for her shimmering vocals and unique blend of R&B, neo-soul, jazz, reggae, and highlife. Drawing inspiration from legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Erykah Badu, she explores themes of life, love, and self-empowerment. Lizzie’s debut EP, Under the Sun (2022), earned praise for its mix of genres and led to sold-out shows and opening slots for artists like Loyle Carner. Her follow-up EP, Am I An Adult Yet? (2023), surpassed 10 million streams, receiving acclaim from BBC 1XTRA, The Independent, and more.

Lizzie’s live performances have included headlining Omeara and opening for Noname on her UK/EU tour. She also showcased at SXSW 2024. Her upcoming single, "Love Deep" (March 2025), features Filah Lah Lah and blends Caribbean lovers rock with 60s Motown influences. With her blend of timeless sounds, Lizzie is solidifying her place as a rising star in neo-soul and R&B. After catching up with Lizzie on her impressive journey, we dove into some key questions about her artistry:

Lizzie, your new single ‘Love Deep’ blends Caribbean lovers rock with 60s Motown influences. What was the inspiration behind the track, and how did your collaboration with Filah Lah Lah come together?

I’m a huge lover of all types of music - my Spotify playlist really will take you on an unprecedented journey. ‘Love Deep’ is definitely a child of genres such as lovers rock, soul, 60s Motown and carries a nostalgic sentiment to it as a result. At the time of making ‘Love Deep’ I felt really inspired to make something that felt old but new and fun but thoughtful. The collaboration with Filah Lah Lah came about by me shooting my shot in the DMs! I’ve been a fan of her music for a while now and this was the perfect song to work together on.

The ‘Love Deep’ music video is beautifully shot and feels intimate yet cinematic. What was the vision behind the video, and how did you bring it to life?

Thank you! This video was directed by the incredible Delenn Vaughan. I knew that she would be perfect for this and she really brought the story to life. The vision for ‘Love Deep’ was to have a video that brought out the themes of longing and yearning. It also serves as part 1 of a music video series, so definitely keep an eye out for the ones to come.

Your music fuses R&B, neo-soul, jazz, and highlife, creating a sound that feels both timeless and deeply personal. How do you approach blending these influences while staying true to your artistic identity?

The truth is, I don't think many artists intentionally think about what sound they’re creating all of the time. When you step into the studio or begin creating an idea, you’re truly just flowing. I do believe that my artistic identity is an amalgamation of all the sounds I love. So, although I’m not explicitly saying “Oh I want to make a soul or jazz tune” if that’s where my spirit is, that’s what's going to show up in the music.

Last year, you toured Europe with Noname, playing to audiences across the UK and EU. What was that experience like, and how did it shape you as a performer?

It easily goes down as one of the most incredible experiences of my entire life. I truly realized that I’m stronger than I realized because it’s a lot of hard work. You really have to pace yourself and look after yourself both physically and mentally. There were days when I was so tired from traveling but still pulled it together to get on stage. I even managed to get hit with food poisoning the night before the London show - I was literally still throwing up 5 mins before heading on stage which is crazy to even think back on. The adrenaline definitely got me through.

You recently performed at SXSW in Texas as part of a British R&B showcase. How did it feel to bring your sound to a global audience, and what was your biggest takeaway from that performance?

SXSW was so much fun and it was amazing to be able to perform in America for the first time. Especially as I’m a neo-soul and R&B singer and that is the birthplace of the genre, so it truly felt like an honor to perform there and be so well received by the people. My biggest take away from the performance was really just taking in how far I’ve come in my journey. This all started off as little recordings in my bedroom and there I was halfway across the world doing what I love. It was the reminder I needed to keep on going.

Your sophomore EP ‘Am I An Adult Yet?’ explored themes of self-discovery, uncertainty, and growth. Looking back, how do you feel you’ve evolved as an artist and a person since releasing that project?

I do believe I’m maturing as an artist and as a person. I’m more self-assured and I’m more confident in myself and the decisions that I make. I’ve still got so much more to learn and this upcoming EP still shows vulnerability but balanced with confidence.

You’ve shared stages with artists like Loyle Carner, Pip Millet, and Mahalia, and performed at festivals like Cross The Tracks. Do you have a standout moment from a recent live show that felt particularly special?

I had a show recently in Dusseldorf, Germany and that was really beautiful as I got to meet fans who had really been touched by my music. Knowing that my music is reaching people who are miles away will never cease to amaze me.

With ‘Love Deep’ out now and a growing reputation in the neo-soul and R&B scene, what can fans expect next? Are there more collaborations, an album, or any exciting projects on the horizon?

My next EP is on the horizon. It explores my life as an artist who also has had to work a 9 to 5 to get by. It’s not all doom and gloom because some beautiful things came out of that experience which has led me on this continuous journey to the pursuit of happiness. I also feel like this is my year of collaborations. I’m such a musical recluse, I still prefer recording in my bedroom over the studio, but this year I’m outside and really down to collab with whatever feels right, so I look forward to hearing what music comes out of this collaboration season.

Thank you for taking the time to have a sit down session with us at Fizzy!
