Little Things To Do To Start Practising Self-Love
As one of the greats said; “A little bit of love goes a long, long way.” This also applies to ourselves.
In 2023, after years of being locked down and restricted in movement (both literally and figuratively), I feel confident in saying that I’m not the only one who feels like they have a lot they want to achieve. As an added bonus of the world pausing for a moment (or ages), we’re all doing it set back. While I absolutely agree that we absolutely should set our sights on our goals and aspire to do only that which we enjoy, it’s simply not always the reality. However, what is the reality is that we’ve all survived an unbelievably difficult and, frankly, traumatic period of time. It is absolutely unfair on ourselves to act as if nothing happened, because it did. So, while we all have lofty goals and things to work towards, it’s important to take time and do little things every day to treat ourselves with love. Because a little bit of love goes a long, long way.
Firstly, we need to make sure we’re not breaking ourselves for people who wouldn’t even bend for us. I know this sounds contradictory, given that I’ve just said we need to treat each other with love, but it only works if it’s mutual. One-sided friendships and relationships will end up taking more than you give them and it’s important to save what you have for the people who deserve it. In some situations, this person is you.
Secondly, start seeking validation from only yourself when it comes to creating the life you dream of. If you have a goal, no matter how big or small, it does not matter what anybody else says or does about this. Self-love and validation means we can turn inwards and use our own power to achieve our goals without seeking approval from others, especially when people aren’t always supportive. You can see your vision, so affirm yourself and make the image of your own imagination real. Never underestimate the power of your own thoughts.
Finally, start prioritizing presence over productivity. We have limited hours in a day, that’s a fact. You can sit and work all day if that’s what you want to do; that’s your prerogative. However, you are defined by more than what you do. Create downtime for yourself and allow yourself to be present, whether this be in a group or on your own. Making 30 minutes in a day to enjoy a podcast, read a book, go for a walk or meet friends; something that allows you to be present in your own life. We have all been through it; allow yourself time to unwind.
