Laufey Style Breakdown: The Jazz Comeback
Jazz isn’t just for christmas.
People argue that modern music isn’t like what it used to be. These people clearly haven’t listened to Laufey. Icelandic-born singer-songwriter Laufey has recently brought an old-school style to the early 2020s music scene. Laufey comes from an extensive musical background as her mother was a Chinese classical violinist, and at the age of 15, Laufey performed as a cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Following this, she was then a finalist in 2014 Iceland’s Got Talent and a semi-finalist in The Voice Iceland 2015. Her classical background, extensive knowledge, and love of jazz are prominent in her music. Your ears aren’t deceiving you; you are listening to something released in 2025. Her style is reminiscent of the old great jazz standard singers, resembling that of Billie Holiday and Chet Baker. With her brilliant layers of orchestral music and smooth vocals, she is bringing jazz back to younger 2025 audiences.
So, if Laufey’s album is the new soundtrack to your life, here is some inspiration from iconic fashion moments in her career so far.
Romantic Boho
Laufey’s style can ultimately be described as romantic. It features soft, flowing silhouettes and materials. One of her outfits that embodies this style is the Chloé Mini Cape Dress in silk mousseline, which she wore during her performance in Melbourne as part of her Bewitched: The Goddess Tour. Laufey’s romantic style embodies the melody of her music; it’s girly and genuine, and it truly evokes a flowy mini dress with an edge of Boho. It's no wonder Laufey is no stranger to wearing a Chloé dress.
Snow White video
Two Laufey staple style pieces are the babydoll dress and puff sleeves. She combined the two in the video for the song “Snow White” from her new album. She wore the Sandy Liang Miyo Dress in white, paired with some Viking Footwear Foxy Black Boots. This look can be deemed as the clean-girls version of Kate Moss’s iconic Glastonbury look, where she combined a mini dress and Hunter wellies. Laufey’s mix of a puffy dress with casual footwear is a great inspiration for anyone wanting to add practicality to their look, whilst still looking dressy. Wellies are chic now anyway, so let’s bring them back to stay all year round.
Lover Girl Lace
Laufey loves a lace fashion moment and has had many in her career so far, particularly featuring a Valentino VLogo signature lace glove. An example of lace taking over the whole outfit is another Chloé look, where she wore a clay pink Chloé Ruffled Camisole Top and Mini Bloomer Shorts in Silk Charmeuse and Lace during a concert in Mexico City. This is another truly romantic and vintage Laufey look.
More recently, a standout lace fashion moment is on the album cover of A Matter of Time. Here she is seen adorning a Vivetta lace top from the Fall 24 ready-to-wear collection and Vivetta lingerie shorts in light blue. This modern interpretation of a vintage material is a bit like her music; this outfit mixes the past with the present.
Pink Polka Dots for the Win
In 2024, Laufey's album Bewitched won the Grammy for ‘Traditional Pop Vocal Album’. To accept her award, Laufey wore a pink Chanel polka-dot set. Made up of a boatneck top with tie-back detailing paired with a low-waisted A-line skirt. This was complete with a waist chain, completing the look in an ultimate Chanel way.
Modern Day Mondrian
Ever wondered what it would be like to live in a Mondrian art piece? Well, Laufey’s music video for From the Start is the embodiment of this. Standing out, though, is Laufey’s block primary colour dress, which is an entire Mondrian dream. It’s an outfit to make you want to practice your scatting skills, whilst embodying the epitome of Bossa Nova sound and Mod fashion.
Laufey continues to astonish with her silk voice and traditional jazz sound, which she brings to life in her fashion looks. We can’t help but applaud her for bringing jazz back and introducing a new generation to what was believed to be a forgotten music genre.
