‘Joker’ Director Reveals Sequel Title
Gotham's favorite clown returns.
Joker director, Todd Phillips teased on his Instagram page on Tuesday the title of the sequel to the 2019 film. The film holds an intriguing title of Joker: Folie à Deux.
This provides insight into the project’s progress. The star of the film, Joaquin Phoenix is shown reading the sequel’s script in the carousel’s second photo. Phoenix portrayed the Joker/Arthur Fleck in the standalone film.
The term “folie à deux” is French for “madness for two,” commonly used to diagnose related people with a shared mental illness or delusion. A nod to where the film might be leading in terms of the plot.
The title could also be a reference to Penny Fleck (Frances Conroy), Arthur’s mother in the film. She suffered from an unspecified mental illness that fostered a delusion of Arthur’s relation to Thomas Wayne (Brett Cullen).
However, “folie à deux” could also be a nod to the Joker’s crime partner, Harley Quinn. Phillips’ caption-less Instagram post failed to provide more details regarding the film.
