Before there was Fenty Beauty or Juvia’s Place, there was Fashion Fair, a Black-owned beauty brand designed for women of color. Fashion Fair was created in 1973 by Eunice Johnson, the cofounder of Ebony and Jet magazines, under her leadership the company broke barriers and interrogated dominant beauty standards at the time.

HBO Max plans to tell the story of the cultural phenomenon that is Fashion Fair and will be directed by Tiffany Johnson and Kiana Moore. Directors will tell the story of Fashion Fair’s “icon status and how the brand surpassed cultural obstacles to overcome beauty standards that previously excluded people of color.”

The docu film, which is a part of the streaming service’s Black Voices and Women’s History Month programming curation, will star Kelly Rowland, Desirée Rogers, and Cheryl Mayberry McKissack.
