Have America Just Found A Vaccine For Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer awareness is not just a month.

POSTED BY DANIELLE SUMMER

Breast cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, affecting over 7 million women in 5 years. According to World Health Organisation, in 2020, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer.

But, after 20 years of trial and error, researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine, have revealed that their vaccine for breast cancer has passed its first human trials.

This vaccine is the most developed, currently in research. The HER2 vaccine works differently to the current vaccines that we are used to; this jab prevents the tumours from emerging again – it doesn’t stop tumours from growing in the first place.

The mastermind behind this vaccine is Dr. Nora Disis.

Yes, a woman.

Disis is an expert in the immunology and immunotherapy of breast and ovarian cancers; she was also the only woman in her oncology fellowship class. With classic sexism in the mix, during Dr. Nora Disis’ fellowship, she was made to “attend the breast cancer clinic.”

Disis and her team announced the stages of their trials in the medical journal ‘JAMA Onchology’. Last November, they announced that 66 women with advanced-stage metastatic breast cancer received a shot of the vaccine, after which they were monitored for an average sum of 10 years. It was common for only 50% of women with similar stages of breast cancer to survive after five years. However, their study showed that 80% of the participants were still alive.

This vaccine could be a ground-breaking discovery in modern medicine, preventing the growth of metastatic cancer tumor cells.
