Gucci Sells A Virtual Bag Worth More Than The Real Thing

How does a virtual Gucci bag cost more than the real thing?
It seems like virtual fashion is dominating the industry as it grows in popularity online, specifically on gaming platform Roblox.
A place to create and explore immersive 3D experiences, one Roblox user coughed up 350,000 Robux (the platform's currency) - which is roughly $4,115 USD for a virtual Gucci Dionysus bag.
Retailing for $3,400, the real bag first debuted back in 2015 but was recently re-released in virtual form during Gucci's two-week virtual event with Roblox, named "Gucci Garden Experience."
The exclusivity of the virtual bag drove those to spend that little bit extra as it was only available for just one hour on May 17 and May 18.
Roblox users took to Twitter explaining, that their online personas are "very important" and "[it's] a way of displaying wealth to people you see online."
Since the purchase, the price for the bag has significantly dropped, having a Roblox value of less than $800 USD. Reddit founder, Alexis Ohanian, commented on the news saying "[the bag]...has no value/use/transferability outside the Roblox world-yet it's worth more than the physical one. Watch this space," he tweeted."
Reminding us all that the fashion industry is changing and is merging with VR technology, the landscape is starting to look very different.
