Grammy Awards Finally Drop The Term “Urban” From Its Categories

Things we love to see: Progression

POSTED BY TENAI PALOMINO

The Grammy Awards have announced that they will stop using the term “urban” to represent music of Black origin.

The Recording Academy’s official memo maintained that the change will begin from the next Grammy Awards in February 2021 and be applied to Latin, R&B and Rap fields, as well as the Best New Artist Category and Nominations Review Committees.

At this year’s Grammy’s in January, Tyler, The Creator expressed his dislike of the term, “It sucks that whenever we, and I mean guys that look like me, do anything that’s genre bending or that’s anything, they always put it in the rap or urban category,” later stating that the term feels like a politically correct way to say the N-word. And we agree. Why is there a term to encompass music created by Black people and not for anyone else? The term within the music industry should have been eradicated years ago, but progress is still progress. We’re getting there.

Billie Eilish also supported the boycott of the term, saying that she agreed with Tyler and that the music industry should not “judge an artist off the way someone looks or the way someone dresses.” Louder for the people in the back.
