Getting A Better Nights Sleep: Protecting Yourself From Blue Light

According to scientists, the blue emitted by our cellphones, laptops, and other devices boasts negative effects on our sleep, skin and mood

If you’re not wearing glasses and serums specially developed as a deterrent, then chances are tiny particles of high-energy visible (HEV) light have already penetrated their way to the deepest layer of your skin. Refracting off your cell phone and other devices, the particles are already at work, breaking down the skins collagen and elastin; these are necessary in order to keep skin firm and lifted. Triggering free radicals and inflammation, blue light leads to hyperpigmentation and ageing spots. It is also suggested that it causes damages to the molecule within eye retinas, forming a chemical reaction that is toxic to retinal cells.

“We have created hundreds of artificial suns with our smartphones, televisions, home and car lights and devices.”

The severity of damage depends on the length of time you expose yourself to the cool HEV rays - and the extent in which you stick to the consumerist vs. participate in patriarchal races with the aim of keeping skin young and toned.

Scientists have long warned of the negative effects of blue light. If the idea of premature skin damage isn’t enough to make you put your cell phone down, then the repercussions on your eyesight, sleep and overall mood may make you think twice.

One notable effect can be to that on hormones. Gaining and losing hormones like cortisol is known to create a circadian rhythm, providing us energy during the day and calming us down at night. Specific exposure to blue light within the range of 420 to 480 nanometers can be found in artificial devices, resulting in disruption to the natural cortisol cycle; surprising energy during the day, stimulating us at night.

Whilst a rigorous digital detox is the most organic way to get your circadian rhythm back to normal, over the years a number of products have appeared in the market – Good news for those of you who aren’t ready to stop scrolling Insta just yet.

Considered the most effective protection comes from wearing glasses. Among many, BLUbox, an Australian brand, provide optimal protection against HEV. Configured of three lenses: colorless fights eye strains and headaches, yellow regulate mood through color therapy, blue providing a physical block against strobes of HEV which are said to disrupt melatonin levels and sleep. Three to five sun breaks per day outdoors ensure optimal and balanced hormones, which is why BLUbox founder recommends consciously integrating the actual sun into our lives in addition to wearing protective glasses”

In conclusion, we live in a world where we would be optimistic to think a digital detox is even of consideration, but there are ways in which we can deplete the severity of damage.

As if we needed an excuse to buy another pair of designer sunnies…
