From Nay To Slay: The Movie Makeovers We’ll Never Forget

The glow-ups that defined iconic storylines.

POSTED BY ANNMARY MAILYAN

Before influencer glow-up videos, we had makeover movies that made us all dream of dramatic before-and-afters. They all followed a similar pattern: one moment, these characters were overlooked and underestimated—a classic “plain Jane”—the next, they stepped into their true fashion potential. And it’s not that they weren’t beautiful before. It’s more about how the right styling choices can completely reshape how a person presents themselves, boosting confidence and driving their character arc forward. Let’s revisit some of the most iconic movie makeovers of the last few decades.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Why does it feel like no fashion film list is complete without this one? It delivers not only impeccable wardrobe moments but also one of the most memorable style evolutions on screen. To fit into the glossy world she works in, Andy Sacks has to reinvent her look, trading simple sweaters for editorial-worthy outfits featuring pieces from luxury brands. Even her hair and makeup get an upgrade, leaning into a sharper edge. By the end of the movie, when Andy reconnects with her true self, her style shifts again, this time toward something more balanced, practical, and effortless.

She’s All That (1999)

Laney Boggs couldn’t care less about fashion or becoming a prom queen. She is a quirky girl who's into art. That is, until she starts dating the most popular boy in her school. We can notice how her outfits start getting softer and more feminine. The scene, when she walks down the staircase in that elegant red dress, is hands-down the best moment of the film. However, I have to admit that I also lowkey loved her “before” looks, as they captured her creative spirit perfectly.

Freaky Friday (2003)

When rebellious Anna Coleman and her mom, Tess, switch bodies, each of them tries to make their new “vessel” reflect their inner self. While Tess’s polished outfits feel slightly off on her daughter, Anna handles the change well. She gets her mom’s hair cut into a trendy style and builds a whole new wardrobe that looks incredibly chic. By combining grunge with sophistication, she gives us one of the coolest movie makeovers ever.

Princess Diaries (2001)

Another film where Anne Hathaway delivers an unforgettable before-and-after moment. Mia Thermopolis’s life changes overnight when she discovers that she is, in fact, a princess. Alongside learning royal etiquette rules, she undergoes a major style update guided by her team. And while Mia was always charming, the makeover makes her drop-dead gorgeous. No wonder everyone at her school—even her best friend—suddenly sees her in a different light.

Miss Congeniality (2000)

FBI agent Gracie Hart would much rather take on a dangerous mission than step into the world of beauty pageants. Still, she goes undercover and has to learn how to dress, walk, and carry herself with elegance. Gracie’s walk in her “Miss United States era” is truly legendary. Yes, even with that unforgettable fall in the end, she still deserves the title of the most sophisticated agent.

Jawbreaker (1999)

Not every glow-up leads to a happy ending, and this film proves that. Fern Mayo, once an outcast, suddenly finds herself among the most popular girls at school. Her new friends give her a dramatic makeover, making her truly unrecognizable. Her new image and sudden popularity, however, turn Fern into an arrogant diva drunk on power. And what started as a dream quickly turns into something much darker.
