The Fall Pieces Making Me Want To Get Dressed Again

There is a very specific moment every September when my wardrobe starts annoying me. I've worn the same easy summer combinations for months, everything feels slightly too familiar, and suddenly I'm desperate for clothes with a little more personality. Not necessarily more clothes. Just better ones.

For fall 2026, I'm looking past the usual parade of trench coats, ankle boots, and sensible knitwear. The pieces catching my attention are a little stranger, a little more dramatic, and much more fun to actually style.

The Coat Needs to Have a Little Drama

I'm officially bored of outerwear that simply does its job.

This season, I'm looking at long, sweeping coats with a little more attitude: velvet, satin, faux fur, rich textures, dramatic collars, anything that makes throwing one over a boring outfit feel like a styling decision instead of an act of survival.

Napoleon Jackets Are Bringing Back the Drama

There is something gloriously excessive about a military-inspired jacket, which is probably why I want one again.

The new versions are less costume and more early-2000s rock star: structured shoulders, decorative buttons, suede, dark denim, and just enough historical drama to make a normal outfit feel slightly unhinged.

I'd wear one with skinny jeans and a ridiculous pair of sunglasses, obviously.

The Back Is the Outfit

Racerbacks are having another moment, and I'm not mad about it.

There's something particularly good about a top or dress that looks almost completely ordinary from the front and then turns around and gives you an entirely different outfit. The silhouette feels sporty, sexy, and a little unexpected all at once.

For autumn, I'd pair one with loose denim, a huge jacket, and loafers. The whole point is that the back does the flirting for you.

I Didn't Expect to Want a Cummerbund

And yet, here we are.

The cummerbund has escaped formal menswear and somehow become one of the more interesting ways to change the shape of an everyday outfit. Wrapped over jeans, trousers, or a simple shirt, it gives you a waist without requiring an entirely new wardrobe.

It's also exactly the kind of accessory that makes someone ask, “Where did you get that?” which is basically the highest compliment clothing can receive.

Accessories Are Getting Deliciously Ridiculous

I'm ready for accessories to stop behaving themselves.

Oversized brooches, enormous earrings, fluffy bags, dramatic hair clips, corsages, strange little decorative things: this is the stuff that can make a simple outfit feel intentional without requiring you to rethink your entire closet.

Sometimes the difference between “I threw this on” and “I have excellent personal style” is literally one absurd accessory.

Put the Pattern Somewhere Unexpected

After a summer of loud tops, colorful accessories, and statement dresses, I'm moving the fun downward.

Paisley trousers and printed jeans are giving the bottom half of the outfit something to do, especially in rich autumnal colors that make the pattern feel vintage rather than summery.

Keep everything else relatively simple and let the trousers be the slightly chaotic friend who somehow makes the whole group more interesting.

So, What's Actually Going in My Autumn Wardrobe?

Not another list of beige basics.

I'm much more interested in the pieces that can change the mood of clothes I already own: a dramatic coat over jeans, a military jacket with something delicate, a racerback showing up under oversized tailoring, a ridiculous brooch pinned somewhere it probably shouldn't be.

The best autumn wardrobes don't need to be enormous. They just need a few pieces with enough personality to make everything else feel new again.

And if you ask me, that's much more exciting than buying another sweater.
