Dressing For No One

I often think about what I’d be wearing if there were no events, no Instagram posts, and no people, specifically men. If no one could see me, what would I be putting on? 

When I’m dressing up, I’m usually doing it to impress other people. I want to look cool, I want to be unique, and I want to look like I just threw my outfit together on a whim. But, because I’m dressing for everyone but myself, my outfits are becoming too safe. I’ll put on my most flattering top and best-fitting mini skirt and call it a day because that’s the style people have pre-approved–my default version of myself that I know has been validated before.

However, the weirdest, most validating, and possibly backhanded “compliment” a girl has ever given me was that I look good because my outfits are unflattering. While I should be a little hurt that my best looks really aren’t doing me any favors, she was right. It’s always the unique, slightly unfitted outfits that emphasize my personality and make me feel my best. 

This compliment reminded me that I’m done dressing for other people, and, instead, will do it just for me. I know the girls are behind me on this one because, when men hate our outfits, that’s how we know they’re good.

It’s time I start trusting my sense of style rather than a mirror or an audience. Wear the outfits you’d choose if no one were around to see them. Maybe they’re more understated, maybe they’re more flashy, but trust me: confidence is received better than any supposedly “flattering” outfit.
