Donatella Versace and Conchita Wurst have been announced as new ambassadors for Stonewall Inn ahead of the Stonewall anniversary, which falls today, June 28. The pair join Anna Wintour, Vogue editor, as ambassadors, a role Donatella feels ‘honored’ to fulfill.

Donatella spoke to WWD, saying ‘What happened here in 1969 was something extraordinary that caught the attention of the world on the issues of diversity, equality, basic civil rights, and acceptance’. For those who are unaware, Stonewall Inn is a gay bar in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan and where the 1969 riots took place which is considered to be one of the most significant events for the modern LGBT fight.

Donatella has been a major LBGTQ+ ally for years, with Elton John and Luke Evans as her close friends. Her brother Gianni, founder of Versace, was openly gay before his death in 1997. Donatella herself is dropping a collection of Stonewall tees with proceeds from sales going towards Stonewall Day and Pride Live, a campaign aimed at remembering the riots and the LGBT fight.

Showing the heterosexual people amongst us to be true allies, she concludes, ‘I could not be more proud to add my voice to the ones of millions of other people who have the strength and courage to demand and change in the status quo’.
