Dom Sebastian: From Tumblr To Runway Real Quick
Ready-to-wear SS20.
I was more than surprised when I found out that Dom Sebastian would make his London Fashion Week debut with a ready-to-wear SS20 collection this season. Known for the Tumblr aesthetic (back when Tumblr was a thing), the designer went viral a couple of years ago.
Fresh out of Central Saint Martins, where he honed his craft on a Textile Design degree specializing in print, his first ready-to-wear line builds on his 2018 experimental graduate collection ‘Gel Futures’, relocating silicone textures and twisted thermoplastics as digitized prints.
Building on his established clinical yet surreal aesthetic, his SS20 collection sees liquids, objects and symbols masterfully transformed into frenetic prints that embody the information overload of the Internet age. The recurring images of vessels also hint at his own preoccupation with the body’s indeterminate relationship to identity – as container, medium, and embodiment of the conceptual self.
