Designer James Flemons Creates Genderless, Sustainable Fashion
Black, Queer Celebrity Designer Breaking Barriers
James Flemons, designer and founder of Phlemuns, creates non-binary, sustainable designs accessible to everyone. Flemons founded the company in 2013 as a Black-owned fashion label out of Los Angeles.
The unisex brand “adopts an inclusive ‘slow-fashion’ approach” to combine nostalgic and modern aesthetics. Lil Nas X, Rico Nasty, Billie Eilish, and Solange are amongst some of the names the L.A. designer has worked with.
As a Black, queer designer, Flemons has faced some disadvantages in a predominantly white, cisgender dominant industry. The Phlemuns creator, who obtained a degree in product development from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, is known for his signature cloud print on designs and celebrity styling.
Flemons styled Lil Nas’ infamous Time cover in 2019 and the monochromatic looks in Solange’s “Don’t Touch My Hair” video. He told Refinery29 “I have acknowledged and accepted that I am not just a designer. I am a clothing brand, a creative entity, an experience, a voice for the unheard, a conversation, a world all of my own that has pushed outside of the limits of this box I was placed in and have now entered the endless limits of infinity.”
We’re excited to see what James drops next!
