Clueless' Cher is Back in New Super Bowl Commercial

All hail the queen of the valley girls. Alicia Silverstone donned her matching yellow-plaid ensemble once more for financial company Rakuten’s Super Bowl commercial. The commercial pits Silverstone’s Cher against her old rival Elisa Donovan’s Amber in a parody of Clueless’ iconic classroom debate scene. Need we remind you that it does not say “RSVP” on the Statue of Liberty? 

Clueless, a spoof of Jane Austen’s Emma set in 1990’s Beverly Hills, is a teen comedy classic. Whether it's the extreme quotability or the iconically striking fashion, Clueless’ charms have cemented its place on the roster as a sleepover movie mainstay. The film stars Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a spoiled yet well-meaning meddling valley girl as she plays matchmaker with her new, awkward friend Tai. 

In the Rakuten ad, we see Cher tooling around her hometown of Beverly Hills, delivering some of the movie’s most iconic lines while dishing on the finance app’s cash back offerings. The fashion is just what you’d expect from a modern interpretation of 90’s fashion. Designer Christian Siriano was enlisted to bring the fashion world of Clueless to 2023, who credited the film for inspiring some of his own runway looks. 

“Any young fashion designer watching ‘Clueless,’ you kind of fall in love with the fashion,” said Siriano to the New York Times.  The fashion designer even makes a cameo in the commercial, disguised as a fellow Bronson Alcott High School student. 

“I used to be pretty clueless about shopping,” Silverstone says as Cher in the ad. If you’d think we’d ever miss this comeback, ugh, as if!
