Choosing The Best Glasses For Your Face Shape

Why some styles seem to suit individual people more than others.

POSTED BY CONTRIBUTING AUTHOR

Have you ever wondered why some glasses look so good on the model and then look awful when you try them on? Or why some styles seem to suit individual people more than others? It’s all down to your face shape. In this article, we’ll take a quick look at which styles suit which faces.

Round faces

If you have a round face, then you should look at styles that contrast with your natural facial curves. Try on frames that are as wide as they are tall and look at frames that are vibrant and colourful. To stop your frames from sitting on your face, look for some with an adjustable nose pad. Steer clear of round frames that will accentuate the roundness of your face.

Square faces

If you have a square face, then you likely have a strong jawline, and quite angular features and so will benefit most from thinner curved frames the most. Try on styles that are soft and rounded, such as cat-eye and oval frames, and stick to more neutral colours such as beige and taupe.

Oval faces

If you have an oval face, then most styles of glasses will suit you because your facial proportions are the most balanced. Go wild and try on some truly unique styles such as a retro cat eye, square frame, or round frame, and don’t be afraid of bold colours either. If you still feel like your glasses don’t suit you, then try a style that is at least as wide, if not a little wider than your face, as this will help your cheekbones to pop.

Heart-shaped faces

If you have a heart-shaped face, then you likely have high cheekbones and a defined chin, making your forehead the fullest part of your face. To balance your narrow chin with your forehead, look for frames that are wider than your forehead, and which are decorated at the endpoints of the frame to draw people’s eyes to the edges of your face. Steer clear of very bright colours, but don’t be worried about experimenting with patterns such as tortoiseshell as they can help to soften your features.

Oblong face

An oblong face is often very long and slender, and so requires a pair of glasses that will add width. Stick to broad, wide rims that have colourful tops as these will help to balance out your facial shape.

Even with this guide, it can take some time and a lot of trying-on to find the style of glasses that suit you best, because every face is different. Take your time, relax into the process and enjoy the ride.

Looking after your frames Having found your perfect pair of frames, it’s essential to look after them so that they can continue to serve you year after year. Even if your lenses get damaged in between, you can always reglaze glasses, keeping the frames the same and the cost low. To keep your frames looking their best, always keep them in their case when you are not wearing them and give them a routine clean with some glasses cleaner to keep facial grease and makeup at bay.
