Chinatown Market Announces Rebranding Its Name

The decision came after the criticism from Stop AAPI Hate organisation.

Chinatown Market is changing its name after the AAPI called out the company for a delayed answer and not speaking up in defense to the racially motivated attacks that occurred in Atlanta last week. Following the shootings at three local spas leaving 8 people dead, 6 of those of Asian descent, the public is demanding the rebrand as it does not support the Asian American community well enough.

Consumers are pointing out at brand’s poor donation plan and its inappropriate title. In their opinion, The Los Angeles-based streetwear label should be speaking up more for the Asian lives while being named after the Chinese culture.

Earlier this month, a petition was made on Change.org, arguing that “the concept of Chinatown is not for sale, especially not by a white person who only uses the word Chinatown as a synonym for bootleg.”

The founder of the petition, Julian Han Bush, has made a change with only 3.367 signatures, saying that Chinatowns are ‘the heart of Asian communities’ and also ‘the only safe place for Asian immigrants unwanted by society'.

“Gentrification, COVID shutdowns, and most recently an unprecedented increase in Anti-Asian violence and hate crimes have pushed already vulnerable Chinatowns and other Asian American communities to the brink of economic and social collapse,” he wrote.

The China Town Market later explained the inspiration behind its name on Instagram. However, the public thinks that instead of posting on social media, the company should rather focus on actually participating and taking action.

The company also faced questions about its posts which barely include Chinese people.
