Cannes Bans Nudity & Voluminous Gowns From 2025 Red Carpet

Festival cites "decency"

Cannes just got a new dress code — and it’s causing a stir. With its 2025 edition underway (May 13–24), the iconic film festival has officially banned nudity and oversized gowns with long trains from the red carpet. The updated rules, introduced through the festival’s "charter," cite "decency" and logistical concerns as key reasons. Think: no more sheer gowns, dramatic cathedral-length hems, or barely-there cutouts. For many, it’s a move that could shift red carpet fashion from spectacle to restraint.

Less Skin, More Structure

The new guidelines mean even celebrities known for turning heads, like Bella Hadid, whose nearly-nude 2024 looks made headlines, will have to rethink their strategy. Voluminous dresses are also off the table, as Cannes wants to avoid blocked walkways and tangled theater seats. What’s in? Cocktail dresses, tailored pantsuits, tuxedos, and sleek gowns. The red carpet is no longer a place for risk-taking silhouettes — at least not the sprawling or see-through kind.

Why Now?

While Cannes insists it’s not targeting creativity, the timing feels deliberate. From topless protesters to headline-grabbing looks at recent award shows, the festival seems eager to dial back the drama—or at least refocus attention on the films. According to organizers, the goal is to keep things flowing smoothly and in line with French standards of decorum. But critics argue it’s a blow to fashion’s theatricality, especially at an event that’s historically embraced bold expression.

What’s Next?

Expect a shift in red carpet energy this year — less jaw-dropping, more understated elegance. Designers may lean into structured tailoring, unexpected textures, and color-forward dressing. Stars, meanwhile, will have to find new ways to wow without flashing skin or dragging tulle. It’s a moment of recalibration, and all eyes will be on how Cannes’ most daring dressers adapt.
