Burberry Cancels SS23 Runway Show In Response To The Death Of The Queen
May she rest in peace.
On Sept. 8, Queen Eilizabeth II passed away at the age of 96. The news caused shockwaves around the world, and England went into immediate action. Of course with London Fashion Week coming up, the passing of the Queen caused a big effect. English luxury label Burberry has announced the cancellation of its London Fashion Week show in respect to Queen Elizabeth II. While Burberry is the first to officially cancel its presentation, it would not be a surprise if other labels were to follow suit.
London Fashion Week itself is still happening according to a statement made by the British Fashion Council. The statement reads, “London Fashion Week is a business-to-business event, and an important moment for designers to show their collections at a specific moment in the fashion calendar, we recognise the work that goes into this moment. Therefore, shows and presentations of collections can continue, but we are asking that designers respect the mood of the nation and period of national mourning by considering the timing of their image release.” The BFC also suggested that “non-essential” events such as parties and dinners should be canceled.
Following the Queen’s passing sets in motion “Operation London Bridge,” which is a 10-day funeral protocol. According to the BFC, any designer scheduled to show on day 10 (the day of the Queen’s funeral) will have to reschedule.
