The humble bucket hat stems from early 20th century Ireland, it was a functional headpiece for fishermen and farmers. It offered protection from the sun and the rain, great for a good day outdoors. Fast forward to the 1940s, the American military issued a similar hat, which then evolved in Vietnam wore. It became a hat with a wider brim to offer more UV protection – so still very much for function. If we look at the 70s, author Hunter S. Thompson sported one and in the 80s late hip-hop artists Run-DMC wore them. Icons Brandy, Missy Elliot, and Janet Jackson were wearing them in the 90s, and the trend just continues on. Even pop princess Britney Spears gave the hat a whirl in the 00s, adding a relaxed vibe to her good-girl image.

When we look to the runway now it's everywhere. Kate Spade SS2020 even featured a fully crotched bucket hat; this one was reminiscent of the 70s with a relaxed brim and a warm color palette. Even the queen of social media, Kylie Jenner, has been seen toting a Prada bucket hat with a matching teeny bag. The trend is timeless. So, if you’ve been looking for something to switch up your look – give one a try. They’re never out of fashion and they keep your head warm, what more do you want?
