Bold Lipstick Is Back

5 lip tips for going out with the old (and nude) and in with the (bold and) new.

POSTED BY LAUREN WATERS

For the past few years, two lip trends have reigned: barely-there, glossy neutrals, and face masks masking our mouths, altogether. Either way, our lips haven’t been the center of attention lately. But, while we have our masks tucked away in our pockets (however short-lived that may be,) we’re embracing the full-face freedom we’ve longed for and letting our lip color do the talking. Here are the top 5 tips to spice up your smile:

Gloss Is The Boss

The popular pre-pandemic pout with a pop of color popped up in the form of a bright hue exclusively in a matte finish. But, with Y2K style (back) in its prime, lip gloss has made a return. The level of gloss is up to you, and just because lip style has changed, doesn’t mean you need to ditch your go-to matte color. Just grab a sheer/ translucent gloss to layer over your favorite lip shade. It’ll add that shiny and fresh look without compromising on pigment.

A year sans face-to-face socialization brought new light to caring for our skin and hair health, rather than just masking our zits with concealer or flat ironing our frizz away. Skin that looks fresh, healthy, and extra hydrated is one of the biggest staples of the 2021 beauty scene. Keeping our lips soft and moisturized is no exception, which is what makes tinted lip balms the perfect way to play with bold shades without drying out your lips. Plus– since lip color doesn’t have to mean saturation, tinted balms allow for pigment paired with subtlety.

Stains Reign

Another thing face masks taught us is the beauty of lipstick that actually sticks even when you’ve got fabric pressed up against your mouth. Lip stains allow you to sport a color that draws attention to your lips without the risk of mess or feeling like you’ve got something caked on your face. They’re an especially great choice if you’ve been going bare-lipped through a lockdown and want to be ready to ease back into mask-wearing.

August of Orange

In honor of August and Leo season, as we watch the summer go out like a lion, we want to look like the queen of the jungle. The Versace Spring 2021 show heavily featured orange lips: a fresh, fiery update to the hot pinks of the past. It’s a modern twist on a fun, celebratory summer look.

Scarlet September

While it’s hard to believe that Autumn is right around the corner, we’re ready for a Fall full of falling back in love with the color of love. From the classic bright red lip à la vintage pin-ups or Taylor Swift’s aptly named Red era to Megan Fox’s viral cabernet-colored pout, we’ll be ushering in the cooler weather with 50 shades of red. Don’t be afraid to embrace a more saturated shade than you’re used to, and be prepared to see more cool, vampy reds as temps lower.

Whether or not you’re usually the type to draw attention to your lips, these tips are a great way to dip your toes in and make your smile the star of the show.
