A Beginner’s Guide to Hair Oil

All things smooth, shiny and soft.

POSTED BY NATASHA TURNBULL

While hair oil has been used for centuries, some people are still unsure where to begin. This article will break down everything you need to know by describing the benefits of hair oil, which oils achieve these benefits, and how best to apply the oil to your hair.

Safety Tips

Before applying any oil to your hair and scalp, be aware that some oils must be diluted before application. Essential oils, such as rosemary oil, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and lavender oil, need to be diluted with a carrier oil. This is because essential oils are highly potent and can cause irritation if applied directly. Carrier oils include olive oil, coconut oil, argan oil, and jojoba oil. Aim to mix two drops of essential oil with one teaspoon of carrier oil.

If you want to use a carrier oil on its own, they are safe to apply directly to the hair and scalp.

What Are the Benefits of Hair Oil?

Hair Growth

One of the most popular uses of hair oil in recent times has been to promote hair growth. Rosemary oil has been trending on social media as it strengthens blood circulation in the scalp and stimulates hair follicles; this has had a noticeable effect on the rapid growth of fuller, healthier hair.

Other oils, such as castor oil, coconut oil, and argan oil, are also effective in promoting hair growth.

Moisturizes and Nourishes the Hair

Hair oils are also known for deeply moisturizing and nourishing the hair. Oils such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil penetrate the scalp and hair shaft, softening the hair and reducing dryness.

Improves Damaged Hair

Another benefit of hair oils is their ability to improve damaged hair. Avocado oil is particularly good for this as it contains numerous healthy fats and proteins alongside vitamin E, which improves the structure and health of the hair.

Other oils, such as moringa oil, are effective in improving and preventing hair damage.

Improves Scalp Health

Various hair oils, such as tea tree oil and peppermint oil, have antibacterial and antifungal properties that help maintain the health of your scalp.

Other oils, such as coconut oil and argan oil, are effective at reducing dandruff and improving scalp dryness.

Reduces Frizz and Adds Shine

Oils can also be applied to the hair to reduce frizz. Macadamia oil, Moroccan oil, and olive oil are particularly effective as they improve smoothness and add shine.

To apply, use a few drops of the oil on towel-dried hair and run it through from the mid-lengths to the ends. This does not need to be washed out.

Application Method

(Except for reducing frizz and adding shine)

1.    Massage the scalp with a scalp massager to promote circulation.

2.    Apply the oil throughout the scalp at the root of the hair.

3.    Leave the oil in your hair for at least two hours.

4.    Wash out the oil.
