Banksy’s Weird And Wonderful Online Store Gross Domestic Product Challenges Convention
"Why does art matter?"
Banksy has never played by the rules and he is not about to start now. Following the successful opening of his showcase store in South London last week, he is now opening an online Gross Domestic Product Store. Intrigued? Us too. We did a little digging and this is what we found out.
The store will not function like a normal online retailer, (shocker) instead it will adopt a registration system. Customers can register their interest for items up until October 28th when the store will go live. So, I guess we should get on that now then!
The landing page for the site states: “The shop is not first come, first served. Due to the limited number of products currently available we are opening a registration system. You have until 28th October to browse the shop and register your interest to buy a product. Please pick one item only, then enter your details and answer the question*.” And what is the question you might ask? Well, it’s the most Banksy question imaginable: “why does art matter?” Um. Talk about a head scratcher.
If you’re wondering what the online store is selling, just a couple of our favorites include a T-shirt with the iconic ‘Girl with Balloon’ image. This time the balloon comes with “an actual jewel on it.” Another highlight is the Banksy Tombstone. Call us morbid for loving it, but it’s just so him. Described in the product details as: “A 230kg reminder that you can’t take it with you. Hand carved by Banksy in a slab of Portland stone.” Perfect to decorate our apartment for Halloween, and maybe beyond…
