Anna Sui Drops SS21 Collection Inspired By Depression Era Watercolors
The American designer shows the ready-to-wear collection digitally for NYFW.
Fashion week isn’t the same this year. Designers have had months in isolation to formulate their new collections, for some this has inspired newfound creativity. Anna Sui is one of those; her SS21 collection is inspired by childhood and her home.
“We’ve all spent a lot of time inside these past few months – I haven’t been at home so much since I was a kid. I began thinking about what home means to me,” the designer states. Sui took inspiration from depression-era watercolors of Charles Burchfield and the French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. The inspirations even came from aprons and tea towels from the 1930s, Sui searched for the everyday beauty of domestic life.
The collection has a whimsical feel to it - dusty rose, pale jades, and ivory all capture the essence of watercolors whilst also keeping the looks dreamy. Dainty prints, floral embroideries, and eyelet lace all come together to bring Sui’s vision to life. The pieces are comfortable and versatile, you can dress them up or down – perfect for today’s world where we might not be going out for a while. ‘This collection is about that homey DIY feel, with a little bit of polish thrown in’.
This collection gives us all hope, amongst all the panic within the industry Sui has created an oasis. Practical, homegrown clothes may be the sustainable way forward. No fuss, just fashion.
