A Foodie In Kyoto

What to eat in a day when visiting the cool girl destination of the year

POSTED BY SOPHIE CLARK

Kyoto is one of the coolest travel destinations right now, and the food scene is a big part of the appeal. The city is bustling and the options are countless, this guide will narrow down your options a little.

WIFE & HUSBAND

Start your day in the cutest, most aesthetic cafe shop WIFE & HUSBAND. As the name suggests, it's owned and run by a married couple. Not only is the coffee shop charming but so are the couple. The menu is short but of incredibly high quality.

Nishiki Market

Finding lunch can be a fun part of your trip if you head to Nishiki Market. This open air market sells a number of traditional Japanese treats for you to feast on. The market has lots of vegan and vegetarian options, including Yuba, a traditional savory dish made from soy milk. The longer you spend at the market the more full you’ll get.

Aburi-Mochi

If you aren't too full after your time in Kazariya, we have the perfect snack for you. Aburi-Mochi. These are sweet roasted rice cakes, and there are two shops across from each other that are known worldwide for this delicacy. Kazariya and Ichimonjiya Wasuke are situated near the Imamiya Shrine, a beautiful piece of Kyoto history and architecture. Perhaps the best thing about Aburi-Mochi is the good luck they are said to bring.

LURRA˚

When traveling it's always fun to visit a Michelin star restaurant. Our first choice would be LURRA˚, a restaurant that combines the best ingredients Kyoto has to offer with techniques from around the world. Headed up by a manager who has worked across Japan, France, and Australia, and a head chef who has worked in Japan, America, New Zealand, and even in the famed restaurant NOMA it's no wonder LURRA˚ is so renowned.
