When the issue of Conscious Consumption is mentioned in relation to cosmetics, labels such as ‘Cruelty free’, ‘Sustainable’ and ‘Vegan’ often spring to mind. But our baskets of powders, creams and lotions can have an even bigger social impact, both positive and negative.

As the IOF continues to attack Palestinians, huge numbers of people worldwide are now boycotting major brands that support the IOF.

Many conscious consumers are instead opting to support homegrown Palestinian brands where possible. For those of you looking for ethical Palestinian-owned beauty brands, here are five, tried and tested which won’t disappoint.

Simi Haze Beauty

Simi Haze Beauty is a sleek, bold and modern international beauty brand pioneered by US-Palestinian beauty entrepreneurs Simi Khadra and Haze Khadra in 2021. The two twin sisters launched their brand in the Middle East earlier this year after success in Europe and the US. The twins have always been vocal about their support for Palestine.

Although, sadly in an interview for The National, the sisters revealed they have faced a lot of hate on social media and offline. Primarily due to their continuous support of Palestine. Attacks against Simi Haze Beauty included multiple petitions to remove the brand from major department stores such as Sephora.

Despite unnecessary backlash, the twins continue to speak out about Palestine whilst creating beautiful and well-designed products.

Dirty Lamb

For those of you who prefer more natural and gentle skin care products. Dirty Lamb is a natural skincare line made from completely organic, ethically sourced, high-quality ingredients.

The brand was Founded by Ahlam Khan in 2016 after the entrepreneur grew bored of other organic products in the skincare market. The Palestinian-American businesswoman, quit her job as a nurse to further develop the brand.

Dirty Lamb now stocks a range of creams, serums, moisturizers, and other treats. All Dirty Lamb’s products are made fresh weekly and are certainly worth the hype. Khan keeps ingredients simple, using everyday household goods such as honey, mint leaves, cinnamon and turmeric.

Hindash Cosmetics

If you are looking for a vegan and cruelty-free makeup brand that doesn’t shy away bold colors, look no further than Hindash Cosmetics. Palestinian-Jordanian celebrity-makeup-artist Mohammed Hindash’s originally a painter, before transitioning into make-up artistry.

After launching a successful makeup page across Instagram and YouTube, the MUA gained a large following rapidly and started painting the faces of celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell.

Before launching his brand in 2021, Hindash also worked with Mac for “Mac Makers” and designed his very own lipstick. As Hindash stated in an interview with Vogue Arabia the brand was “Years of manifestation”.

The Palestinian Soap Cooperative

Sometimes, going back to basics is key when designing an efficient an effective and skincare routine. Traditionally Palestinian skincare consisted of one essential staple: Nablus soap.

This magical soap is made of olive oil and is part of an ancient soap-making tradition stretching back just over 4000 years. This amazing and simple product is safe to use on even the most reactive and sensitive skin types.

If you are looking to invest in this wonder product, Palestinian-American-owned company The Palestinian Soap Cooperative, distributes this beauty secret worldwide at a great price.

Toulane Essentials

Toulane Essentials is a luxurious skincare brand founded by Palestinian-born sisters Eman Al-Sherif and Dina Al-Sherif. The brand is Inspired by their simple beauty regimes growing up which included the use of Nabulus soap and their grandparents’ fragrant essential oils.

The pair have formulated a range of botanical-based, rich, vegan and cruelty-free products which give you a healthy glow and expensive feel. My personal favorite product I have repurchased would be the Charcoal Soap, which has cleared up my breakouts hugely.

Whilst the brand is still relatively small, the quality of the products demands attention.
