Musicians cleverly adapted to the throes of 2020, proving that creativity knows no bounds. Among it all, there was a significant rise in female-produced viral hits, particularly on TikTok. We’ve taken the past year into consideration and gathered four of the biggest upcoming artists that we predict will make a serious impact in 2021. After all, why not get ahead of the game?
Meet Me @ The Altar
WOC pop punk band Meet Me @ The Altar began in 2015 when guitarist Téa Campbell met drummer Ada Juarez through YouTube. After the addition of vocalist Edith Johnson in 2017, the trio worked on their music remotely. The band had an impressive 2020, receiving a grant from Halsey’s Black Creators Fund and releasing their latest single, Gardens. If you like the sound of Meet Me @ The Altar, stick around- they’re touring in May with Hot Mulligan, Super American, and Heart Attack Man, and will be hitting up Riot Fest in September on top of new single drops. We can’t wait!
Beabadoobee
Beatrice “Beabadoobee” Laus has had a busy few years. She released her first original song, Coffee, on YouTube in 2017 and racked up 300,000 views. After signing to Dirty Hit (home of The 1975) her career has skyrocketed, particularly in the last year. She performed at the 2020 NME Awards after receiving the Radar Award, was ranked as the Top New Rock Artist by Billboard, and released her debut album Fake It Flowers in October. If you scrolled through TikTok in 2020, you’ll undoubtedly recognize the catchy sample of her single Coffee that was used on the viral hit, Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head). It became an international success, entering the top 5 in the global charts. You can catch Beabadoobee in 2021 on her UK and Ireland tour.
Tate McRae
Tate McRae is the voice behind the TikTok viral hit You Broke Me First. It entered the top 10 charts worldwide and has surpassed 400 million streams on Spotify. At just 17 years old, Tate has an accomplished background as a dancer and has proven herself as a musician to watch. If you’re impressed by Tate’s sound, you can look forward to her US and UK tours in 2021. But be quick- her 2020 headline tour completely sold out.
Girl in Red
Named as a queer icon by Paper and a phenomenon by The New York Times, Marie “Girl in Red” Ulven has been on the scene since 2015. Her first single, I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend, amassed thousands of listens online and gave her a platform for her later releases, Summer Depression and Girls. She became notable on TikTok in mid-2020 after users coined the phrase “Do you listen to Girl in Red?” as a way of queer identification. Unfortunately, her debut studio album World In Red doesn’t have an official release date yet, but we hope it’s ASAP.
