Stepping Into ‘Love Me Land’ With Zara Larsson

We talk singles, her upcoming album and 2020 so far!

POSTED BY KATT RODRIGUES

We managed to catch hit queen Zara Larsson for a quick catch up about her 2020 life so far and latest sexy single ‘Love Me Land’.

Hi Zara, 2020’s been a rough one for the music industry and touring that’s for sure, how have you been getting on?

Well even though I haven’t been able to do festivals and stuff this summer, I LOVE the fact that I’ve just been chilling out, I’m hanging out with my friends which I don’t really get to do that much. It’s still weird, it’s not the same it’s of course not completely normal but I’m just trying to enjoy my time off.

Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your new single ‘Love Me Land’?

So the inspiration was me being really in love, I didn’t really plan for it, I didn’t really look for it - I was in a place where I didn’t really want to fall in love, I didn’t want to be in a relationship and then you end up there anyway, and you’re like “wow, how did I end up here, I’m in love me land!” and now I love it. It’s kind of like the place where you dare to take that step and allow yourself to be loved and to love someone else.

What inspired the music video?

I’ve always wanted to do a dance video where the focus is just me expressing myself with not only singing but dancing. I love to dance and the people who see my live shows might know that, but you don’t really look at my videos and go “oh, this girl can dance!’ so I wanted to get that across, it was all quarantine friendly too!

I wanted it to be artsy and sleek and nice, it’s very sexy and glamorous but also futuristic, it was everything I wanted that video to be - not too much going on, no distractions, just me and the song.

Could you tell us about your upcoming, second international album?

I’ve been working on this album for a really long time, it’s a bit more personal, it tells my story from when I was a teenager until now. There’s a lot of perfectionism that goes into it, I literally could have gone through it over and over again and in the end, I just had to say “enough! I really want to release some music”.

When I did this album I wanted it to have different dynamics like my live shows, I miss performing for a crowd so much because you look into a crowd and its not just numbers when you see someone singing in front of you, you realise that they probably have their own memories to the songs - that’s why music and albums are so powerful, I’m not just creating my story I’m creating a soundtrack for someone else’s moments.

I put so much pressure on myself to make it perfect and then I have to take a step back and remember it’s just pop music, my manager likes to remind me that we’re not going to Mars you know? But I did want it to be right, even if it was just a collection of hits, I have some great songs so it was really hard to pick, but we did it!

Are there any songs on your album that you would say are your favourites?

Oooh, that one is really hard! I really like the next single that’s coming up, like ‘Love Me Land’ is one of my favs, like hands down, so good but also right now I really like a song called ‘What Happens Here’ and it’s about girls getting to the bee’s knees you know, getting comfortable with talking about it.

It sometimes can seem that in this society girls don’t want to get laid as much as guys do and that’s a fucking lie cause we do! It is what it is, let’s just own that you know? Like forget the social rules, if you want to tell your friends about it do it - it’s definitely an honest track, as the album really is.

Is there anything else coming up in 2020 besides the album you can talk about?

There’s still so much uncertainty, I had a really fun brand deal coming out which I was looking forward to a lot, but that obviously got pushed into 2021. Everything has just been kind of put back really, this year is going to be so dead - there will still be a lot skyping and video stuff like virtual shows, but really nothing much else apart from the new album, that is definitely happening!
