Will TikTok's New Feature Really Help To Prevent Minors From Seeing Adult Content?
The app recently conducted tests to decide whether or not a "mature themes" button is needed.
When we hear the phrase “adult content,” we immediately assume nudity, sex, or violence is involved, but that’s the opposite of what TikTok has in mind as they run tests for adult-only live streams. With this new strategy, TikTok is trying to restrict the age range for live stream viewers on their app to 18+. While TikTok hasn’t implemented this policy for the entire app, a select few members will participate in the experiment.
Over the last few days, screenshots of the tests have been released from Watchful.ai. The photographs show a new feature under the settings tab in the app. This trait will allow users to restrict their live streams to adults only by pressing a “mature themes” button. Even though some users may view this feature as a way to broadcast sexual content or violence, TikTok will remove any live streams that breach the app’s guidelines.
This approach to preventing minors from seeing content that may not suit them sounds good in theory. However, other apps, such as Twitter, have similar policies, but people find loopholes in posting adult content. In addition, both apps have parental controls that protect children from accessing inappropriate content, so would it make more sense for TikTok to put this new feature in the parental controls section instead of in the app’s standard settings panel?
