Why We Can’t Stop Loving Ugly Trends?
And how messy outfits feel effortlessly chic.
I’ve first noticed the word “ugly” deliberately used for wardrobe pieces when ugly Christmas sweaters became a thing. People were choosing them over classic winter patterns back in the 2010s. Then came the Crocs, clunky sneakers, extra-puffy coats and vests, and so much more. Now it’s a well-proven fact: eccentric fashion is dominating the trends, continuing to grow in popularity. But if you think about it, why are people loving such bizarre style moves? Let’s dive in.
A Quick Fashion 101
The term “ugly chic” was created by Miuccia Prada in 1996 when she presented her collection called Banal eccentricity. It was a small revolution against the traditional and classy trends that were popular in the 90s. After that, more people started leaning into quirky styles, as if declaring they were on the “weird” side of the barricade.

In the last few years, these unconventional trends have been enjoying a second wave of popularity, slowly displacing the minimalistic it-girl looks. Color-blocking, the intentional messy-girl and whimsical aesthetics are all the results of the ugly chic comeback. People add a frankly scary Labubu to their classy Chanel bags, wear an oversized colorful bomber with an elegant black dress, or pair chunky sneakers with lingerie. And somehow that’s considered high fashion today.
Why People Love It
So, what’s appealing about these controversial looks? First and foremost, we’re collectively tired of similar tailoring, color combinations and patterns. You go out and see the same type of boots, coats, jeans, and tops on pretty much everyone. Social media influencers often seem to share a wardrobe—they all dress the same. Sure, it does look polished, but it doesn’t let you stand out. And now, people have realized the power a strong personal style hold. It makes you unique and instantly adds aura.

Growing up, I remember being told to never wear my favorite Converse with a floral dress or a skirt, because they belonged to different styles. Or not to pair a blazer with ripped jeans. That’s what the traditional fashion dictated for years. And that’s exactly how it created its antagonist—eccentric chic, which lets us be more creative and free with our wardrobe choices. Socks with sandals? A combination of zebra- and leopard-printed pieces in one outfit? Bold colors mixed together? These not only work now but are considered modish.
Another reason to love these quirky outfits is the effortless vibe they give off. People want to look stylish without making the impression that they spent hours assembling a flawless look. Ugly chic achieves this perfectly, creating the illusion of carelessness: you appear naturally stylish, as though fashion comes easily to you.

I guess it’s safe to say that these unusual trends let us riot against the fashion standards, and I honestly love it. Even if I still may consider some pieces a bit too peculiar for me, I can’t resist experimenting.
