Why We All Admire The Fashion In Clueless
You know you want a yellow plaid suit.
Clueless is one of those iconic films you can watch again and again and not get sick of it. Released in 1995, the high school comedy is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, but the looks are still timeless. With a star-studded cast (Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy), this film brings school nostalgia to the best of us. To this day, the infamous yellow plaid suit worn by Cher is mimicked constantly.
Costume designer Mona May is responsible for the clothes in the films. Usually, in a film there are on average 25 costume changes. In Clueless, however, Cher has a grand total 60 changes. Dionne has 45 and Tai 30. These are just the main characters; May also had the task of dressing the supporting cast and extras too!
Sourcing the costumes was a mixed bag. Some thrifted, some from high-street stores and some designer. May mixed these clothes together to create chic looks. “Nobody wore high and low. Dionne had a D&G top, but then she had a 50s purse” stated May. Though this is not how anyone really dressed at high school (we wish), the visuals and design are flawless.
Costumes tell a story through the character Tai. She begins the film as a skater girl, like any 90s high school girl - thanks to grunge music, but as the story progresses Cher gives her a makeover. Except, this new preppy look just isn’t the real Tai. Cut to the end of the film where she’s a mix of both the looks and happier than ever. Maybe it is time to give the cult classic a re-watch!
