As a child, we all thought to have backache was a sign of getting old. We might even have teased our parents about their bad backs, telling them it’s a sign they’re becoming elderly! However, once we grew up, we realized that backache is not just a problem for oldies - it’s a problem for everyone. Many people in their teens, twenties, and thirties, experience terrible backache which impacts their lives and causes stress.

Sometimes this backache is easy to cure, sometimes not. A bad back doesn’t necessarily mean you are injured, but can come down to a plethora of reasons, be it lifestyle, health, or even anxiety. But nobody deserves to constantly be in pain, and backache isn’t just something we should simply accept as a part of life. Luckily, there are many avenues to explore when getting to the bottom of your sore back!

Seeing a doctor

If you’re in pain all the time, even if the pain is not unbearable but just sort of annoying, you should consult a medical professional. Being taken seriously as a young person with chronic pain can be a challenge, so make sure you stand your ground. Some young people even find it useful to take an older relative or friend with them, who might have more confidence to demand answers.

When a specialist examines your back for the first time, they might not have the answer straight away. Sometimes tests and further examinations are necessary, especially when it comes to serious back problems like scoliosis. Having scoliosis treatment, or other chronic back treatments, can take a long time, but it’s worth it in the end.

There’s a lot of false information online, and be careful when it comes to making decisions about your health. If you’re worried, always see a professional.

Notice how you sleep

Your sleep can drastically affect the way your back feels from day to day. Having a mattress that doesn’t support you by being saggy or old can bring serious pain upon your body. When you sleep, your muscles relax, not holding themselves with lots of tension. Your back, therefore, will take the brunt of this support, if you don’t have a mattress that can hold you up properly.

Another reason for neck-ache due to poor sleep might be your pillows. Take note of the angle your neck is lying at when you’re sleeping - are your pillows pushing it too far upward, or not supporting it enough? This could be the reason for your soreness.

Speaking to your body

One way to keep your body feeling supported and healthy is to engage in gentle exercise. Sometimes, hard exercise can actually worsen your back problems. If you do have serious back issues, do not lift weights or run for long periods of time! Instead, get into some gentle movement and stretching, like yoga or pilates. These practices do wonders for your spine’s health and can help you relax mentally too. If your mind and body are free of toxic feelings and stress, you can bet that your back will thank you for it.
