Why I'm All About The Medieval Revival

A blast from the past.

POSTED BY JOSEPHINE ALLEN

If you've browsed online fashion spaces recently, you've probably seen content surrounding medieval revival fashion—whether it's the dramatic medieval influences of the 1970s or the romantic reinterpretations that came back in the 2000s.

As a big Y2K lover, I'm especially drawn to the 2000s version. Watching Ella Enchanted as a kid had me convinced that I could effortlessly pull off a brown leather belt layered over a maxi skirt. Looking back, maybe that exact outfit wasn't my calling, but I still love the dreamy, princess-like elements of the era. These days, I'm much more interested in her white corseted minidress moment.

It's easy to understand why medieval fashion has such a strong appeal. It brings together everything I love about romantic dressing: jewel tones, crushed velvet, flowing silhouettes, lace details, corsetry, and delicate accessories. There is something so magical about clothing that feels like it belongs in another time period.

I've always had a more princess-inspired style, and I'm also a huge history nerd, so seeing medieval influences return on TikTok and Pinterest has felt like the perfect excuse to lean further into this niche. Unlike some trends that rely on buying one specific item, medieval revival fashion feels more like a styling approach. It's about creating a feeling.

A puff sleeve blouse instantly feels more dramatic. A velvet skirt makes an everyday outfit feel a little more special. Adding a vintage-inspired necklace or a leather belt can completely change the mood of an outfit.

I also love how this trend overlaps with other aesthetics we've seen become popular recently. There's a little bit of cottagecore in the romantic fabrics, a touch of fairycore in the whimsical details, and even elements of whimsigoth when darker colors and heavier textures come into play.

What makes the medieval revival especially fun is that you don't have to dress like you're attending a Renaissance fair (although if that's your thing, I fully support it). A corset-inspired top with jeans, a flowing skirt with a simple tank top, or a pair of statement sleeves paired with everyday basics can bring just enough fantasy into a normal outfit.

Maybe that's what makes these historical-inspired trends so appealing. They allow us to escape our everyday wardrobes for a moment and embrace a little imagination.

I think the only way to soothe my medieval fashion appetite is to buy a puff sleeve blouse and fully embrace my Ella Enchanted fantasies.

Here are my Fizzypicks to help you create your own medieval revival wardrobe.
