Wedges Aren’t Just For Summer: The Year-Round Appeal Of The Wedge Heel
Wedges, 24/7, 365.
When most people think of wedge heels, they picture summer: floral sundresses, sun-soaked garden parties, and a margarita pitcher within arm’s reach, but this can also be good for stomping through the frosty slush of the colder months. From wedge boots to trainers, and even styling wedge sandals with tights, these shoes are a year-round staple that balances comfort, style, and practicality.
Wedge Boots
Ankle or knee-high, you can never go wrong with a boot. Sometimes in the colder months, it’s too cold to just wear sneakers, and our ankles aren’t cut out for the intensive workout that comes from wearing heeled boots. This is where the wedge boot becomes your best friend. Who said commute looks had to suddenly become dull? Grab that wedge heel and strut with the added confidence a heel gives without—hopefully—falling on your face.
Wedge Trainers
No conversation about wedges is complete without mentioning Isabel Marant’s iconic wedge trainers. Launched in 2011, the Marant Bekett sneakers sparked debate—some deemed them ugly, while others deemed them chic. Either way, they are iconic. Everyone you idealised in the early 2010s owned a pair. Wedge trainers give casual outfits a boost (literally). They combine the cool-girl vibe of sneakers with the subtle height of a heel, making them perfect for errands, brunch dates, or street-style moments. It’s bohemian, it’s Kate Moss, it’s Serena Van Der Woodsen and ultimately Marant.
Wedge Sandals
Think your summer wedge sandals are destined for storage once the temperatures drop? Think again. The answer to this? Tights. Sheer or thick tights are always the right option. Thanks to big fashion brands like Miu Miu, using thick wool tights as an accessory, adding tights doesn’t need to be “frumpy”. Slightly wacky, but pairing summer sandals over thick tights or socks can be done. I think thick grey wool tights, a wedge sandal, with a grey mini dress or skirt can scream office siren. Are you brave enough to try this?
This winter, add a balance between fashion and functionality to your wardrobe by incorporating a wedge shoe. Before you know it, you're going to become that friend who insists that a wedge is “way comfier than any other shoe”.
