What Can We Expect From Victoria’s Secret 2024 Show?

Will they bring the sexy back?

POSTED BY ANA BEATRIZ REITZ

When Victoria's Secret's Instagram account announced on May 15 that its infamous fashion show would be returning – with a reel featuring Candice Swanepoel, no less – netizens and fashionistas alike were met with a mix of emotions. After all, Victoria's Secret has a long history of controversy. From its lack of diversity to its board members' relationships with known criminals, the buzz hasn't gone away, even with its return in 2023, when the show was adapted into a short film.  In fact, it grew as the presentation was deemed by many to be a disappointing rebranding – one that completely stripped away all the sparkle and glamour of the lingerie company while perpetuating the bias that plus-size women can't be opulent and sexy.

But things seem to have changed. "We've read the comments and heard you. The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is BACK and will reflect who we are today plus everything you know and love – the glamour, runway, wings, musical entertainment and more," the lingerie company's Instagram account stated. Now, several questions emerge. For starters, what can be expected from the live runway show's comeback – for the first time since 2018 – on October 15 this year in New York City? And most importantly, will they bring the sexy back?

A  recent feature has provided a glimpse at what we might see next month, in matters of designs. "Victoria's Secret has a long, rich history with Swiss fabric house Forster Rohner," writes Copy Director of VS Jenn Stull in the company's post on their website. With nearly 30 years of collaboration, this year's creations are the result of this enduring relationship.

The Victoria's Secret sneak peek also included a behind-the-scenes conversation with the women behind the work: Juliette Schwander, Sales Director at Forster Rohner, Priscilla Polley, AVP of Design at Victoria's Secret, Audrey Buddle, Project Manager at Victoria's Secret, and Seraina Ryffe, Designer at Forster Rohner.

Together they discussed the inspiration and nuances of the partnership to create a show. “We wanted to keep that modern heritage look and feel, but something that was very elevated and luxurious, but still kept that glamour and fun vibe that we're known for for the fashion show, " shared Audrey Buddle, project manager at Victoria’s Secret. With deep dives into their archives, moodboards with various influences, bold colors, interesting textures, and the pursuit of lots of faux fur, rhinestones, and glitter, the show looks promising.

While nothing has been revealed about the legendary Fantasy bras – for instance, in 2000, Gisele Bündchen wore a $15 million diamond and ruby encrusted piece that was the most expensive lingerie ever created at the time – expectations are still high.

Expectations about the music are at the top, too. But the brand has already revealed who the performers are, who are nothing short of iconic. With three singers, the artists are an all-female lineup that will see legendary American singer and actress Cher, R&B star Tyla, and K-pop sensation Lisa dominating the stage while the models walk the runway.

As for the cast, there are icons present as well. So far, models such as Imaan Hammam, Paloma Elsesser,Taylor Hill, Mayowa Nicholas, Grace Elizabeth, Devyn Garcia, and Candice Swanepoel have been announced to raise her wings and fly on the runway. Then, there it was. A promotional video with Gigi Hadid fiercely walking in a hotel lobby and handing a golden invitation from the brand to one of the original angels: Tyra Banks.

According to the label, both Hadid and Banks will be back at the show, along with the previous mentioned models. Netizens and fashionistas, however, are already prompting if we can expect a twist that will have the return of cult-like models like Gisele Bündchen, Jasmine Tookes, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Romee Strijd, Alessandra Ambrosio, Joan Smalls, Miranda Kerr, the participation of renowned contemporary figures such as Precious Lee, Mona Tougaard, Alex Consani, and Colin Jones, or even the so-waited runway comeback of Bella Hadid

Even if not every wish will be fulfilled, there are plenty of expectations and possibilities filling the minds of the audience. Will the lingerie giant be able to live up to those? Only time will tell – but Fizzy has a certain shimmery feeling.
