How Model Alex Consani Became Gen Z’s Newest It Girl

She’s brat, she’s couture, she’s humor. She’s everything.

Fashion week, mama. Who’s ready to ride. From dancing and singing Lana del Rey's Peppers on a New York City subway to a "What's in my bag" tour backstage at Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2024, model Alex Consani has been long praised for her beauty, humor, authentic demeanor, and relatability. Open TikTok and see for yourself –  whether it's her main account @captincroook, secondary @ms.mawma, or even her recent appearance in the hit Charli XCX ''360'' video clip.

Not only does the model dominate the platform's for you and trendy hashtags together with some music clips, but she also commands the runways of renowned luxury labels like Tom Ford, Thom Browne, Diesel, Versace, and Alexander McQueen, to name a few. As the first transgender model to be signed by a model management company called Slay at the age of 13 – a premonition? – Consani paved her way to the top. Now signed to the famed IMG agency since she was 16, the model can be seen everywhere from New York to Milan. But how did she make it?

Born in Petaluma, California, Alex Consani sometimes felt like her aspirations were out of reach because of the lack of representation and role models for trans people. But with a lot of strength and supportive parents who helped her transition at age 12 and took her to Harbor – once called Aranu'tiq –, a trans summer camp in New Hampshire, she was fully determined to go into modeling. Modeling, she did. At the age of 15, having walked in every show at Los Angeles Fashion Week, she finally felt that her dream was within reach and her life mission. And some years later, she took over New York City. In the concrete jungle where dreams are made, Consani surely made hers.

From her runway debut in New York, which was none other than the Tom Ford Spring/Summer 2022 in September 2021, to being the face of Jean Paul Gaultier's collaboration with London label Knwls, which was released in September 2023, you can be sure that when the audience raises their cell phones watching the runway, it is Consani they are filming. They're clearly filming her not only because she's one of the supermodels of these times – Vogue Magazine has named her one of the standout models of Spring/Summer 2023 while Who What Wear dubbed her the People's Princess –, but also for her high social media footprint on TikTok, a result of her sassy and irreverent humor.

From imitating an Italian city guide while walking down the Milan streets to singing Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" on the corners of New York, Consani exudes a raw spontaneity with an unfiltered humor that is not commonly associated with models. Such a personality has undoubtedly contributed to her noteworthy rise in social platforms and her modeling career. She resonates with Gen Z's spirit of being authentic and unapologetic – even when some behaviors could be considered awkward or uncomfortable.

But humor is not the only thing that contributed to Consani's rise. Her fairy-like features and signature bleached hair and eyebrows have played a role or two in making her unforgettable. But so did her runway presence. After Tom Ford, it's safe to say all were smitten. Because from then on, she’s been everywhere – be it in London’s Connes Ives, Milan’s Ferragamo, or even in Vogue World's Paris 2024 show wearing none other than La Perla.

But everything she does has the fashion audience and professionals hooked. With a distinctive walk, which reminds many of Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen's renowned horse walk, Consani brings a sweet nostalgic bouncy energy to the runway during a time when things become too dull. ''I like extra and I like extravagance,'' the model said of her walk in an interview for The Face Magazine.

With incisive steps and a light control of her hips, Consani is one of recent years' most sought-after models when it comes to runway drama and performance – check out Thom Browne's whimsical Fall/Winter 2023 runway where she transformed into the Little Prince and gave him a dreamy but also punchy feel or Mugler Spring/Summer 2024 where she rocked a clear waist-plate, with a black statement floor skirt and a long sleeve crop top.

But Alex Consani is also in demand on all sorts of runways. From couture excellence at Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring/Summer 2024 by Simone Rocha in a sheer rose corset dress with a voluminous skirt to Victoria's Secrets Tour 2023 in a custom gold ensemble, the model proves to be everything. Aside from a fabulous fashion presence, her personal style – from mini skirts to statement boots – is nothing short of iconic.

When commemorating her 21st birthday in New York with an open bar and her close friends, the model donned an archival Roberto Cavalli silk cocktail pink dress with a leopard corset and a yellow Birkin, later changing for a vintage Versace top, Ferragamo boots, a polka dot stripe low-rise skirt. Think about celebrating in style.

Style and fine taste run through her veins. As does the appetite for more. An aspiring actress, the model has already taken acting lessons and even appeared in various music videos – from King Princess's ''For My Friends'' to JT's ''Okay.'' As she told Who What Wear, her desire is "... to get in the coms, the roms and the yawns, babe.''

But for her, the runway is like acting too. In an interview with Models.com, Consani described the runway experience as putting on a persona in the same way an actress does. With her raw charisma and determination, she is about to become the latest big-screen romcom it-girl. And we love her for it. But her next plan? World domination.
