The Velvet Rope Moved: How London Traded The Club For The Run Club

(and What It Wears Now)

POSTED BY ANNA GRAHAM

Picture a London pavement on a Friday, a little after seven. It could be the stretch where people once queued for a club, shivering in something far too thin. The crowd is the same age, with the same buzz and the same quick look around to see who else has turned up.

This lot are in running tights, though, and nobody is waiting to be let in. They're waiting to set off. Did London stop going out? I don't think so.

I think the night moved earlier, and the way in changed from a queue to a booking, a group chat or an invitation.

What the Sales Figures Show

The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) said on 22 September 2026 that Britain's late-night venues are 28.7% below their March 2020 level. Nightclubs have fared worst, down 36.1%, while bars are 3.1% above their March 2020 level.

The same release draws on NIQ sales data. It says 5pm to 7pm now accounts for 25.1% of on-premise sales, ahead of 7pm to 10pm at 24.4%, with 12pm to 3pm also ahead at 24.5%. It also says Britain is becoming an "early night economy". Most of these figures cover Britain. On NTIA's separate count of night time economy venues, Greater London has lost 15.5%, against a 14% contraction nationally.

In November 2025 NTIA said younger adults are choosing earlier, shorter and more purposeful nights out. It said over a quarter of consumers had reduced or stopped late-night visits, with cost the biggest driver. London, it added, faces tougher trading after midnight because of higher costs and weakened transport links.

Run Clubs as a Way to Meet People

Strava's 2025 report put the growth in new running clubs on its platform at 3.5 times. Its 2024 global survey found that nearly 1 in 5 Gen Z had been on a date with someone they met through exercise. It also found that Gen Z were four times more likely to want to meet people through working out than at the bar. A run club gives you a reason to turn up, a route to talk along and a coffee afterwards if the conversation goes well.

Fewer young adults drink, too: Drinkaware's 2025 Monitor found that 26% of Gen Z adults don't drink, against 16% of all UK adults.

CNN reported in July 2026, citing London Marathon statistics, that more than a third of the runners who finished this year's race were aged 18 to 29. In 2010, 2016 and 2019, runners under 29 made up between 18% and 21%. That counts marathon finishers, not run club members, but it suggests the London Marathon field is getting younger.

Padel Turns the Court Into a Meeting Place

LTA Padel said in March 2026 that 860,000 people in Great Britain played at least once in 2025, more than double the 2024 figure. It counted 1,553 courts at 559 venues. Padel is played in fours on a court you book, and the LTA puts the average off-peak booking at £7 per person per hour.

Investors are adding courts too. City AM reported in May 2026 that Padel Social Club had raised £5.5m and was adding 17 courts across three London sites this year. Its chief executive, Kristian Hunter, said padel has "an incredible ability to bring people together".

Supper Clubs Around One Table

National Geographic Traveller described London supper clubs in February 2026 as gatherings that can happen in a flat kitchen, a garden or even a converted train carriage. It said the constants are a communal table, a quirky venue and a set menu. One founder it quoted called them places "where strangers can connect over food and conversation". Of the six it named, one takes bookings through her own website and most of the rest announce dates online or on social media. Some people arrange company for a dinner or an occasion too, and high-end London escorts are one option.

A Booking Instead of a Queue

As I read it, the way in has changed as well. A club queue was a test you could pass by waiting. These nights tend to start somewhere else: a booking, a group chat or a friend's invitation.

Membership is another way in. Knight Frank's 2024 guide said more private members' clubs had opened in the previous four years than in the three decades after the Groucho Club opened in 1985.

The Dress Code, Rewritten

The clothes followed the night. Wallpaper's 2026 guide to running brands, updated in August, says Satisfy's luxury kit wouldn't look out of place in a nightclub. Kit like that is meant to look as if you didn't think about it, which takes a lot of thought.

Padel borrows from the tennis club. Bustle described the après-padel "country club classic" in September 2026 as a pleated skirt, fitted polo or tank, a sweater over the shoulders and trainers. Its wider idea was court-to-coffee outfits that need no change of clothes, and Hello! quoted Pounce Padel founder Georgie Rennie in February 2026 saying there "really aren't strict rules" for a padel wardrobe.

TheIndustry.fashion reported in August 2025 that Pulco, a London-designed brand founded in 2022, had become the first padel apparel brand to launch at Harrods. It described the range as "elevated athletic apparel" with "understated, off-court elegance".

The supper club sits in the middle. I'd call it undone polish: good tailoring worn loosely, a silk slip under a big knit and one piece of jewellery doing the work.

The practical effect, as I see it, is that the early evening has no changing room. If you go from a run club or a court straight to a table, one outfit has to do both jobs. The polish ends up in the details: a better knit, a cleaner pair of trainers, a bag that isn't a gym bag.

Fizzy's own writers have covered the dress side of this. In June 2025 one said dress codes had slowly disintegrated, noting combat trousers and trainers in a club queue. The same piece added that dressing up was still a choice. In January 2026 another wrote that this year is a grand return to nightlife, with more effort and glamour in what we wear. We can be both the clean girl and the party girl, the piece said. Its go-to formula is low-rise jeans, a sparkly top and a fur coat.

I think that second view suits a city going out earlier. When more people cut back on late nights, the ones they keep count for more. So the sequins, the heels and the red lip come out for the birthday dinner and the launch.
