UK Midwives' Advice To Pregnant Women Is Changing For The Better

What's “normal” anyway?

POSTED BY DEE CUNNING

UK Midwives will be abandoning their campaign for “normal births” to prevent mothers who opt for medical interventions from feeling like failures.

Since 2005, the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has run an initiative which encouraged expectant mothers to forego medical interventions such as epidurals, inductions and cesareans in the belief it is best for many women. From now on, midwives will use the term “physiological births” to describe those without interventions.

“What we don’t want to do is in any way contribute to any sense that a woman has failed because she hasn’t had a normal birth. Unfortunately that seems to be how some women feel,” Prof Cathy Warwick, the chief executive of the RCM told The Times.

We're feeling a little puzzled about why they chose the word “normal” in the first place. We say, stop encouraging pregnant women to compare themselves to others – whatever your choice, every single one of you is doing GREAT.
