Two-Headed Calf On Literature And Joy

We sat down with the band to talk about poetry, Sylvia Plath, and their unique sound.

Two-Headed Calf are one of the most unique bands on the scene, and they are comfortable in their stepping away from the norm. They formed after Sarah, the vocalist, was at a gig and realized the music played by bands, “was so much fuller and more eventful.” From there she met Callum, who plays guitar, and finally Katie, who plays keys. They find their group dynamic too strong to mess with, “if we add someone else to the group it might throw us off, and that's not really worth the risk.”

From the name of the band all the way down to individual lines in songs, the band is very literary. Two-Headed Calf comes directly from the poem of the same name. They describe the poem as matching their vibe, “its joy before the impending doom.” They are very politically aware but are finding the positives in fighting back against the bad of the world, describing themselves as hippies.

The literary theme continues with the song they're working on, inspired by Silvia Plath, it's based around the fig tree analogy. Sarah is the main lyricist and told us, “I had been reading the bell jar, and because I was reading it I had been drawn to a lot of Sylvia Plath stuff,” She really resonated with the idea of there being so many things you could do and being paralyzed by choice. Despite this they think the song isn't as sad as it sounds, “I wrote it as being in a forest, and it's nice to be in a forest.” They really are a group that can find joy in anything.

They have a very strong creative loop, each idea from one member will inspire more from the other. With this we can expect more absolutely beautiful songs. With their debut song Wasteland, Sarah started it with an acoustic version but the ambient sounds that draw you in so effectively were Callum and Katie playing together, riffing off each other. The sound they found with Wasteland set the baseline for the style they wanted to pursue. The results are set to be deeply moving.
