Tom Ford's AW21 Collection Is A Legacy Of The Pandemic

The Collection features deconstruction of luxurious pieces.

POSTED BY CATHERINE SHUTTLEWORTH

For his Autumn/Winter 2021 collection, Tom Ford wanted to intertwine pandemic culture with couture. Ford said that the deconstruction of luxurious pieces is something that we will see for seasons to come, as a remnant of the pandemic. Ford described it as, “a more casual way to be extravagant.”

The collection looks at a re-emergence from pandemic life which we have been accustomed to for almost a year now. For that reason, Ford wanted to focus on eveningwear, a contrast to less glamourous sweats we have all become accustomed to since being at home. However, Ford decided he wanted to imbue this exuberance with daywear, expressing our desire to go back to ‘normal’ whilst still capturing the inevitable hesitance that will be felt by many.

Continuing with a bold theme for the collection, Ford styled short slip dresses, hot pants, and mini-skirts with amplified volumes of outwear on top – creating an upbeat and out-there look. Ford admits that he loves short skirts, saying, “being a child in the 60s did that to me, I think.” Though, Ford did recognise that this may not be everybody’s cup of tea, so he offered an alternative.

Whilst the majority of the womenswear collection featured black, lilac, sugar pink, and sunflower yellow all peek through, as well as pops of neon and animal print. Ford explained that he’s been drawn more to color since moving to LA from London. In the menswear collection, however, the colors really come out. Pyjamas in bold colors and patterns are another nod to stay-at-home fashion whilst still embracing luxury.

Ford’s menswear collection takes inspiration from the 60s and 80s, whilst combined with the signature well-tailored Tom Ford suit. “Suits can be armor, but they can also make daily activities seem like an event,” Ford explains. This again shows the collections nod to the pandemic, with most of us trying to make our daily trip to the grocery store a fashion event.
