5 Tips To Create The Perfect Home Workspace

Increase your productivity and improve your creativity.

POSTED BY GUEST WRITER

In the past year, we have seen a massive shift to remote working with most employed adults currently working from home. Therefore, having a dedicated workspace with perfect workplace acoustics in your home has become essential to increase your productivity and improve your creativity. However, it can be hard to know how to start, especially if you live in a studio or a small apartment. We’ve put together 5 tips to create the perfect office in the comfort of your home.

Invest in an office chair

It can be tempting to just use a dining chair for your office space but trust us, you don’t want to do that. Dining chairs are not designed to support your back for several hours at a time. Choosing the right office chair can be quite challenging but always try to go for back, lumbar and arm support. You also want to choose the right fabric, mesh-back chairs are often a great choice because they are breathable and therefore perfect when the temperature rises in summer. Cushion type chairs are more comfortable but less supportive and breathable.

Add some art

If you have a creative job, having some art in your office space can really make a difference. It should inspire and reflect your personality. You could choose to add some inspirational quotes to motivate you throughout the day or you could energise your space with vibrant wall art from your favourite movies and tv shows. Generally, we recommend using colours to promote productivity, but you could also add a cozy “hygge” vibe with candles, blankets, etc.

Invest in some plants

Indoor plants are not only great for your health as they reduce stress and improve air quality, they’re also beautiful and will add a dash of green to your office space. We would recommend getting a spider plant, a snake plant or even an aloe vera. These plants are easy maintenance and tend to do well in an office space.

Declutter

Your home office should be neat and organised to avoid getting distracted. Firstly, make sure to get rid of items you simply don’t use or don’t even belong in your office space such as your children’s toys or your workout gear.  Make sure your office space is dedicated to working only. We would also recommend organising your paperwork, you could invest in a folder or you could scan your documents, so they're stored online.

Inject some colour

We’ve already mentioned plants and art but don’t be afraid to paint your office ‘walls as well. Colours are well known to affect our moods and therefore our productivity, in fact, it’s a trick often used by businesses. For instance, yellow is used to help with creativity while blue and green are meant to boost focus and bring relaxation and serenity. We would avoid black walls as they can dramatically impact your mood and make you feel low and unproductive.

Use aromatherapy

Don’t be shy with candles and essential oils. In fact, some scents have been proven to reduce the amount of work errors/typos by 54%! They can improve your performance and make you feel better overall. Scents such as lavender, jasmine, cinnamon and peppermint have been recommended for boosting productivity and mood.
