The Veganuary Guide
Doing it for the planet.
If you haven't heard about Veganuary by now then you’ve probably been living under a rock, or taking a break from social media—though if that is the case, Veganuary is a campaign, started in 2014, encouraging people to try Veganism for the whole of January. There are numerous health benefits to trying a plant based diet, such as a reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, along with the many environmental benefits. So here are a few tips for a successful Veganuary.
Small Substitutes
Rather than ditching your repertoire of staple dishes, try substituting some of the ingredients. Small changes are far more sustainable in the long term than drastic ones. So swap your beef patty for a beetroot one, there are some delicious meat substitutes out there.
Plan Ahead
Meal prepping can make Veganuary a lot easier, though most restaurants now offer vegan options. On the Veganuary website you can find a list of Vegan friendly restaurants, so you won’t have to worry about eating out.
When In Doubt, Scan It
It can get pretty tiring reading the labels on every product you consume, but luckily there’s an app for that. On Spoon Guru you can select the Vegan option in settings, and with a quick barcode scan you’ll know whether the product is Veganuary friendly.
Pack On Protein
It can be a little more difficult to get in your protein when you stop eating meat, but luckily there’s a vast array of alternatives. Chia seeds, quinoa and nutritional yeast are among the top ten plant based proteins.
