The Insensitive Yoga Mat

Louis Vuitton sells out of a product that shouldn't have been sold at all.

POSTED BY LEXIE JAMES

People from the Hindu community have called for an apology from Louis Vuitton, due to their insensitive yoga mat product. Yoga is an ancient Indian practice used in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. For Hindu’s especially, the cow is believed to be a sacred symbol for life. Which makes LV’s choice for using ‘natural cowhide leather’ questionable.

It’s well known that the classic LV Neverfull canvas bag is made of plastic. Starting at $1,420.00 it’s possibly the most expensive plastic bag out there, if they can successfully sell these, they can sell anything. Thus reinforcing there was no need to use cowhide for the mat. However, it could still be insensitive as a majority of their products do go against Hindu beliefs.

You wouldn’t buy vegan food from the butchers…

The mat has now sold out online, even at its $2,390.00 price point. LV explicitly state “Acting Responsibly and with Social Awareness” is part of their code of conduct, but it would appear they haven’t done that with this product.
